Join us for the finale of Dunn’s Great Big BC Pickle Contest – Saturday, October 15th Trout Lake Farmers’ Market
Some of British Columbia’s perfect palates are puckering up for pickles this week as they judge a province wide BC pickle contest. Sponsored by Dunn’s Famous, a Montreal smoked meat restaurant deli (since 1927) opening in Vancouver this November (their Montreal restaurant goes through as many as 5000 pickles a day), a call was put out across the province earlier this summer looking for the best pickle recipe in BC. Home canners were invited to drop off their pickles (whole pickling cucumbers) at farmer’s markets in Penticton, Maple Ridge, Victoria and Vancouver and twenty food writers, celebrity pickle experts and chefs were called on to taste the dozens of pickles that came in narrowing the field down to just eight for a live pickle judging this Saturday at Trout Lake Farmers’ Market. The winner receives an all expense paid trip to Montreal for two, airfare and Montreal attractions passes included. Runners up receive all-you-can-eat pickle cards and gifts certificates to Dunn’s new Vancouver location. For the public on Saturday, endless pickle samples will be given away and there are draw prizes for all-you-can-eat-pickle cards and dinner at Dunn’s Vancouver location.
The blind tasting (pickles were numbered and remained anonymous) gave points for taste and flavour (saltiness, vinegar, dill and other ingredients), texture (crunch) and colour, with the top eight decided by total points. Food writers Alexandra Gill (Globe & Mail), Andrew Morrison (Scout Magazine, Vancouver Magazine), Anya Levykh (CBC, EAT Magazine), Don Genova (CBC, Cookbook author, blogger), Erin Ireland (Metro Newspaper), Jennifer Schell (Wine Trails Magazine), Shelora Sheldon (Western Living Magazine, Vancouver Magazine), Joie Alvaro Kent (Vancouver Magazine, MonteCristo Magazine), were joined by on air hosts Erin Cebula (Global TV, ET Canada), Fred Lee (CBC, The Courier), Caren McSherry (Global TV, Gourmet Warehouse), Rick Cluff (CBC) and professional chefs that included Hamilton Street Grill’s Neil Wyles and Go Fish/Bin 941’s Gord Martin to take on the tasty task and this Saturday, October 15th, a number of the judges return to judge the final eight pickles live where, at a table reminiscent of an old fashioned country fair, they will be seated in front of jars of pickles as they thoughtfully crunch their way through the final eight and announce their grand winner!
Vancouver participants are encouraged to head down for the live judging, while Victoria, Okanagan and Fraser Valley participants will be contacted by phone.
