We’d been meaning to check out the newest culinary addition to West 4th Avenue, Malaysian and Thai-themed Spoon Kitchen. Tucked underneath the fitness club at 1909 West 4th you could almost miss it, but it’s worth seeking out for a casual weekday meal. Right now SocialShopper has an eight-course menu for $24 – (click link to buy). It would regularly be $49.50 and it is indeed a great value as we took leftovers home and had a chance try out a new spot.
The meal begins with a fresh mango salad, followed by 2 tender chicken satay skewers and roti with a mildly spiced coconut curry dip.
The green beans were fried and crunchy with a flavourful soy-based sauce with a hint of spice and dried fish.
The Heong Fish Fillets were nicely battered and deep fried without being greasy and Rendang beef curry was a plentiful dish with a mild curry sauce.
I do prefer my Pad Thai less sweet and with the egg integrated into the dish rather than the decorative way Spoon Kitchen topped it but they do get points for having plentiful chunks of tofu and shrimp.
We choose the black rice pudding with coconut milk was sweet and satisfying. The other option was pisang goring, deep fried banana.
Overall a good deal for a quick weekday dinner. I will be back for the Heong Fish Fillets for certain.
