At farmers markets around Vancouver Christine Hoekstra can be found with her delightful baked goods under the Blackberry Hill sign. Her pies are what she is known for, but I’m always tempted be the date squares, eccles cakes and deliciously moist carrot cake. Hoekstra also makes jams and jellies and supplies her pies to a few restaurants around town. Follow on twitter to see where they’ll be next. Delicious tweets! http://www.blackberryhillinc.com/home.htm Twitter: @Blackberry_Hill tel: 604-258-PIES Catch her at Khatshalano Art + Music Festival!

Khatsahlano Arts and Music Festival I’ve been visiting restaurants on Vancouver’s 4th Avenue to find out what they will be doing for the upcoming July 13 Khatshalano Festival and found a few new ones I worth checking out. Tractor Healthy Everyday Foods has opened at 1903 West 4th and serves a range of fresh and healthy salads, sandwiches, soups and stews in a informal cafeteria-style format. I loved their beet and green bean salad, beef stew and gluten-free chocolate cookies Further west Peaceful Restaurant is now open at Balsam and West 4th and features dishes from Northern China such hand-crafted…

Kitsilano’s Las Margaritas is one of the oldest restaurants in the area. Home to food that is a combo of Mexican and Californian influence, it is a fun spot with lots of different tequilas, in fact the biggest collection we know of in British Columbia. I’d go ahead and customize your margarita with an upgrade. There’s a patio that can fit 60 and the staff is super friendly. Salsa and chips arrive as you do. We stopped in for a Saturday night and found the Cochinita Pibil tacos to be the best bet, oven roasted Achiote marinated pork, oven roasted in a…

The meaty aromas coming from a strange looking tank-like fixture at the Winter Farmers Market is what first attracted me to the Chili Tank, but vegetarians fear not, there’s a veggie version too. The tank is an actual military soup kitchen that was found in Germany and shipped to Canada and can be heated with wood, propane or diesel. The tank can be found at events around the Lower Mainland and will be at the Khatsahlano Music + Arts Festival serving up soups and chilis made with fresh, local produce. The serving bowls and utensils are biodegradable and they use a green…

I have a friend, a food writer and editor, who comes to Vancouver, struts to Granville Island at what seems to me as the crack of dawn to wait, and not so patiently, for the white chocolate blueberry bread from Terra Breads. I myself covet the veggie sandwich and the Foccacia and, truth be told, any of the bakery’s breads, especially those involving olives. Terra Breads was one of Vancouver’s first massively magic bakeries that revealed themselves to me, changing my impression on bread thereafter. I am at one of their locations at least once a week and highly recommend…
This week Vancouver got a little more thunder from down under with the arrival of The Aussie Pie Guy food truck, currently in front of the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in the 600 block of Hamilton Street near Georgia. The truck has sweet and savoury individual pies such as the Veggie Pie with potato, eggplant, zucchini, red pepper and onion and the Aussie Pie with BC beef and pepper gravy made with Howe Sound Rail Ale. There’s also a Brekkie pie with bacon, eggs and cheddar, vegan and gluten-free options and plans to add sausage rolls along with daily specials. There…
