Venture out to New Westminster and you’ll soon be able to sample right from the tap at Steel Oak Brewing Co. It’s fitting that the city be home to a new brewery as it’s history of brewing dates back to the 1800’s and continued until 2005 when one of the big guys shut its doors. In fact there is a Brewery District brewing in the city.
Owned by locals Jorden Foss and James Garbutt. Beers brewed by Peter Schulz who spent time at Russell Brewing and then headed to Germany to take the brewmasters program at the Technical University of Berlin. He then worked at Guinness and at Schalander Gasthausbrauerei in Friedrichshain, Berlin before heading back to BC.
I interviewed Foss at the brewery a few weeks back and he mentioned that the beers with be “European beers with a Northwest twist”. In the works are a Red Pilsner, a Smoked Hef, an ESB, and a Pale Ale. The Oak in the name hints toward their barrel program which will get under way later in the year. For now there will be draft on tap shortly as they are just on the verge of opening and bottles towards the fall.
