Sweeney’s, “we may not be big but we’re small”* restaurant, featuring Yaletown’s smallest patio, is now serving dinner. And by serving we mean actual, drum roll please, table service!
Situated on Hamilton Street in previously undiscovered ‘NOHE’ (north of Helmcken), nestled among the dollar stores, car dealerships and fabulous seafood restaurants, sits Sweeney’s of Yaletown. Opened this past June for lunch and really late breakfasts (it would seem Yaletown doesn’t “do breakfast”), Sweeney’s has been serving fresh, made by hand sandwiches, salads, soups and exquisite baked goods to folks brave enough to set foot in this tough part of Yaletown. Chef Glenn Saunders and his team (is two people a team?), in a kitchen with very little actual equipment, have been using the freshest ingredients to create made-to-order slow-fast food that is simple, creative and satisfying – and doesn’t break the bank.
Now Glenn and his team are making even more magic with their convection oven and a couple of induction burners. From 5pm nightly, Sweeney’s offers a new dinner menu – with table service – rewarding the adventurous who fearlessly tread the mean streets of NOHE with a surprising range of items. Using local ingredients wherever possible, often organic or natural, starters include a refreshing yellow tomato gazpacho and a salad composed of spot prawns, cherry tomatoes, black olives and barrel feta with a yuzu lime dressing. Mains include the now famous lunchtime staple, meatloaf sandwich (strong enough for a man but made for a women), as well as Peace Valley lamb sirloin and a tostada made with Fraser Valley pork tenderloin. Guests can cap off dinner on our micro patio with cappuccino mousse topped with Guinness foam.
We could talk about our, always double shot, Salt Spring coffee but instead let’s talk about what we want you to drink with your meal – Choose a beer from a unique list put together by Barry Benson, the ‘B’, in R&B Brewing, or some wine from Sweeney’s brief and concise wine list. With an emphasis on quality and value, bottles top out at $30 and all our wines are available in 100 ml (perfect for lunch time or that “just another half a glass would be perfect”) and 200 ml servings as well.
Now, it is summer so, back to our patio – Yaletown’s smallest patio is just 14 seats and if you can stand the thought of good food, without 300 other people looking at you, with music played at a level that allows conversation, and servers who don’t spend more time getting ready for work than they do working, this might be the place for you.
Sweeney’s, a scrappy independent restaurant in Yaletown. Don’t blink or you’ll miss it.
