Vancouver Coffee Crawl runs September 21–27 with café takeovers, guided neighbourhood routes and a closing party

More than 30 cafés are taking part in the second annual Vancouver Coffee Crawl, running through September 27.

There is a particular pleasure in letting coffee dictate a day: choosing a new neighbourhood, following the smell of a fresh roast, and giving yourself permission to stop for a pastry even though you already had breakfast. The second annual Vancouver Coffee Crawl has made an entire week of that possible.

Running now through Sunday, September 27, the crawl brings together more than 30 participating cafés across Vancouver, from Yaletown, Gastown and Coal Harbour to Kitsilano, Fraser and Hastings-Sunrise, with a few stops beyond the city proper. It is an easy prompt to revisit an old favourite, but also a smart way to discover the independent cafés that make this city’s coffee culture feel so alive.

Many of the names will be familiar to regular coffee drinkers: Elysian, Pallet, Prototype, Timbertrain, Modus, Nomad and Analog are all involved. The pleasure is in the mix, though. The roster also includes small, characterful rooms such as Annabelle’s, Feast & Fallow, Mah Milk Bar, Noct Coffee, Oidé Coffee, Penny Penny, R Ki Coffee Lab, Slo Coffee and Toña Bakery & Cafe.

The events worth planning around

The schedule gives the crawl a little more personality than a simple checklist. On Wednesday, September 23, Unveil Coffee Roasters takes over the pour-over bar at Toña Bakery in Dunbar for babka and brews, with a preview of what it is developing for its forthcoming Kitsilano café. Later that day, Kapé Coffee and Subo Bakery bring Filipino coffee and meryenda, the afternoon-snack tradition, to Noct Coffee.

On Friday, September 25, 2024 Canadian Brewers Cup champion Kunie Inaba will be behind the pour-over bar at Oidé Labo. For people who prefer to make a day of it with company and a little context, there are guided crawls in Kitsilano on Saturday, September 26, and Grandview-Woodland on Sunday, September 27. The week closes with a wrap party at FUNK. Coffee Bar in Coal Harbour, including coffee, food, drinks, a latte-art throwdown and raffle prizes.

My advice: do not try to conquer it all. Choose a neighbourhood, make two or three thoughtful stops, and leave room for something you have never ordered before. A well-made pour-over and a good pastry are usually plenty of itinerary.
