Baskets in colourful bloom, scrumptious home baking and farm-fresh fruits and vegetables put Vancouver in a summertime state of mind.
Since the 1970s, the Public Market on Granville Island has been Canada’s most iconic food market and Vancouver’s original go-to place for year-round fresh ingredients, vibrant stalls and wholesome ingredients. When the weather breaks, the fertile Fraser Valley bursts with farm-fresh plants and produce and the Market spills outside to Triangle Square, creating one of the city’s largest Farmers Markets.
Starting June 6, the Farmers Market on Granville Island is held every Thursday. Flowers — for planting in beds and containers or ready-to-hang in generous baskets — and produce start the season. Baked pies, tarts, granola bars, cookies and macarons complement the stalls of leafy greens and fragrant flora. Take terrines, condiments or artisanal chocolates – hand-made by passionate vendors — home to friends and family or straight to the docks and nearby parks for a perfect picnic.
Monthly Farmers Market highlights include:
June: flowers, ornamental trees, hanging baskets
July: strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, cherries, greens of every kind
August: peaches, plums, apricots, corn on the cob, even more greens
September: apples, squash, pumpkins, still more greens!
