Beer Wars Break Out at District 319

On January 17, the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) Vancouver is hosting two screenings of Beer Wars at District 319.

Director Anat Baron takes us on a no holds barred exploration of the U.S. beer industry that ultimately uncovers the truth behind the beer label. This contemporary David and Goliath story goes behind the scenes to reveal the daily battles and all out wars waged between small, independent brewers and powerful corporations unwilling to cede an inch.

The challenges faced by craft brewers are related through the personal stories of the film’s two main subjects, Sam Calagione of Dogfish Head Brewery and Rhonda Kallman of New Century Brewing. These are supplemented with interviews of other brewing entrepreneurs and executives, and those that offer the perspectives of distributors, retailers, journalists, academics, politicians, and consumers.

Beer Wars is a revealing and entertaining journey that provides unexpected and surprising turns, and promises to change the world’s opinion on those infamous 99 bottles of beer on the wall.

About the Campaign for Real Ale

In 1971, angry beer lovers in England formed the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) to combat the replacement of traditional regional beers with “mainstream” factory beers. Affiliated with the now 100,000-strong CAMRA UK, CAMRA BC was incorporated in 1990 as an independent consumer organization to:

* maintain consumer rights

* promote quality, choice, and value for money

* campaign for greater appreciation of traditional beers, ciders, and perries as part of our heritage and culture

* promote and preserve full-flavoured & distinctive beers and decent pubs

CAMRA Vancouver was established as a chapter of CAMRA BC in 2002.
