A New Bun In The Oven – PappaRoti

IMG_3697If you’ve visited Malaysia in the last ten years you are bound to have run into PappaRoti, a buttery and coffee-caramel coated bun. The PappaRoti Cafe’s now number 400 worldwide; the first location recently opened on Canada down towards the end of Robson Street.

So what are these buns all about? Well they sound sweeter than they taste, which, in this case, is a good thing. They are soft on the inside, crisp on the outside and filled with a buttery centre. Toppings for these snacks include maple syrup, ice cream, caramel chocolate, nutella, whipped cream, strawberry and banana; rotis are perhaps Èthe new crepeÈ. I actually preferred mine with a side of Lebanese cream cheese which pushes it towards the savoury side of treats, a place my taste buds feel more comfortable.

In addition to the freshly made buns, the Robson Street location is serving JJ Bean locally-roasted coffee and Teaja loose-leaf tea, along with a few other well-chosen beverages and some very tasty sandwiches made by East Van’s Kessel & March.
