Quick Conversations in Wine Alison Moyes Liquidity Wines
Right around this time each year, we’d be madly going through the list of wines to add to our must taste list, arranging interviews with visiting wine royalty, and practising our spitting technique, all to prepare for the one and only Vancouver International Wine Festival. Sadly, it’s a very different year. But wine people are a feisty bunch, and this pandemic has meant many creative pivots and pirouettes for all. It’s spring, and tasting rooms are opening again soon, spring releases have already been bottled, and some shipped, and there’s plenty of green activity in the vineyards! What are you most looking forward to in wine for 2021? There’s much to celebrate and we’re continuing to do so by covering the wine industry. Barb Wild, Good Wine Gal, and our series of Women in Wine is continuing again, this time with Alison Moyes of Liquidity Wines.
What you have you been up to? How’s isolation affecting you? What do you miss most?
Being able to come into the vineyard has helped with the isolation. It has been able to keep a sense of normalcy during this time. I mostly miss being able to spend time with friends.
Favorite grape variety? Or Favorite wine?
Pinot Noir. Pinot really wears its heart on its sleeve. It can’t help but show off its growing region and terroir. Pinot Noir can display many distinctive characteristics, but you can always count on it displaying its sense of place.
Favorite food? Or Memorable Meal?
Put me on a patio next to the ocean with some fresh sea food and I’m happy.
Funny thing happened on the way to the vineyard?
Well, it may not be funny, but I can tell you a very memorable event that happened in our vineyard a couple of seasons ago. One of our neighbors was felling a few trees on his property. One tree fell the wrong direction bringing down a powerline with it. That power line landed on our metal deer fence causing it to become electrified. This resulted in the fence catching the grass on fire around a length of the perimeter fence. While the fire was easily and quickly put out, it is a day in the vineyard I won’t forget.
Yoga? Meditation? What keeps you going?
Gardening is my zen. I find nurturing plants from seedling to their full fruition very satisfying. I find hiking to be very centering. Part of the reason I moved to the Okanagan is the lifestyle. This area has some amazing hikes. Hiking helps me get my mind away from the everyday stresses and allows me to soak up the peacefulness of my surroundings.
Blundstones or Blahniks?
Blundstones for everyday but a pair of Blahnik’s for that special night out….
Dog or cat?
Cat, they have such quirky personalities
If you could speak another language, what would it be and why?
I’ve always wanted to learn how to speak Spanish. A few months ago, I decided to stop putting it off and am now taking weekly lessons.
Which are you a fan of? Organic, biodynamic, vegan, low alcohol wines?
I believe strongly in organic. I put organic farming to use at work and home. As for biodynamic, vegan, and low alcohol wines? I’m a fan of good wine. If it’s not full of faults, well made and delicious, I’m a fan.
