Converstaions In Wine – Christa-Lee McWatters on BC Wine, Mentorship and Sparkling
The Vancouver International Wine Festival is underway, and we’re highlighting some of the inspiring women shaping the wine industry today. In this edition of Conversations in Wine, we spoke with Christa-Lee McWatters, whose roots in British Columbia wine run deep.
As the daughter of BC wine pioneer Harry McWatters, Christa-Lee grew up immersed in the world of vineyards and cellars. Today she continues that legacy through her leadership roles at Gate 22 Winery and Adega on 45th Estate Winery in the Okanagan Valley, helping guide two wineries while championing collaboration, mentorship, and the growth of British Columbia wine.

When and how did you know the wine industry was where you belonged?
Having grown up in the wine industry, my passion for it started early. I made my first wine when I was just nine years old, and from that moment, I knew this was where I belonged.
Who, or what, inspired you to be in wine? Do you have a mentor?
My dad, Harry McWatters, has been a lifelong mentor and inspiration. Growing up alongside him in the winery and traveling, I learned firsthand about dedication, quality, and the hard work it takes to build a successful wine business. His guidance taught me to value both tradition and innovation — lessons that continue to shape how I lead and grow in the industry.
Another important mentor was Danielle Giroux, Director of California Wines Canada, who was my manager at Vincor International. Danielle helped shape how I think about marketing, brand building, and long-term strategy in the wine industry. Her experience developing strong wine brands and building high-performing teams provided valuable guidance as I grew into leadership roles.
Where did you study or learn to make wine?
Growing up at Sumac Ridge Estate Winery.
Do you have a favourite style of wine?
Sparkling.
What is your favourite food and wine pairing?
Bubbles and potato chips.
Do you have a favourite wine region aside from where you are working or living?
Champagne.

When you are not in the vineyard or winery, what are you doing?
Cooking and spending time with my family and our two dogs.
What do you love about your current winery, role, or job?
What I love most about my role at Gate 22 Winery and Adega on 45th Estate Winery is the incredible team I get to work with every day. Most of our team members have over 20 years of experience in the industry, and their passion, knowledge, and dedication are inspiring.
As a women-led company, with 85% of our team being female, we’re building a culture where everyone is empowered, brings their best, and genuinely loves what they do. Our goal is simple: share our love of British Columbia wine, support each other, and have fun every single day while doing it.
If wine wasn’t your career, what would you be doing?
When I was younger, I always wanted to be a helicopter pilot.
Are you part of an organization for women in wine?
Yes, I am a director on the board for Les Dames d’Escoffier.
Any advice for women wanting to follow in your footsteps?
Make sure you have fun. This industry is demanding and can be stressful at times, but it’s incredibly rewarding to watch guests connect with your wines and see how they become part of their special moments and experiences.
