Elevated Dining Experience With Ned Bell

Dinner In The Sky by Chef Ned Bell

The first question almost everyone asked when I told them I was participating in Dinner In The Sky, a dinner where your table is 150 feet in the air, is what if you have to pee? And honestly, it was my biggest worry too, but after I was told it is only an hour up in the sky I thought I could probably handle it. The dinner is in North Vancouver until July 28 and starts in West Vancouver on August 4th. There are a few different options ranging from $149 – $349, the $149 includes a drink, and and a savoury and sweet treat in the sky and for $349 you get canapes and sparkling wine on the ground and a full 3-course dinner with wine pairings in the sky. There’s also an option of having your meal prepped by Chef Ned Bell for $299 and that’s the option that I was participating in.

We had some canapes and sparkling wine on the ground and then were tightly strapped in to our seats for the journey up. The ascent into the sky is slow and steady and the night I went the weather was perfect. The cables holding the platform the table rests on are thick and plentiful, I felt at ease and guess what? I never even thought about peeing.

Crab Tacos

Chef Ned’s dinner started with the unveiling of his signature crab tacos, which handily enough i have the recipe for here. These are superb, a generous amount of crab with plenty of fixings stuffed into an extra crispy taco.

I don’t know the chefs from the other dinners, but the cool thing about dining when Chef Ned Bell is cooking is that he’s full of stories of the food we are eating and I guarantee some of these guests left far more knowledgeable on the subject of sustainable seafood.

The service is attentive here of course, as where on earth would your server take off too? I opted for the wine pairings as well, as why not go all in.

Beautiful BBQ’d prawns were next up.

The main course was a perfectly cooked BC salmon, complete with local corn, and we finished with a chocolate pudding with cherries. The latter was so good I forgot to get a picture.

I made a few new friends up here and even got a lift out, I had taken the seabus to get here by the way, always a fun journey.

The chairs tip back, so of course I had to test that, I think the wine had given me a bit of liquid courage.

Would I do this again? Most definitely! It’s such a unique experience and even came complete with a copy of Ned Bell’s latest cookbook Lure, Sustainable Seafood Recipes from the West Coast, which I hope to dive into soon.
