For a few Sundays this summer (the next one is September 23) the Vancouver Farmers Markets comes downtown to the patio at Market at the Shangri-La Hotel Vancouver. I headed downtown for the July 29th event and tried out the Farmers Market Menu Brunch. Chef Wayne Harris works with the vendors at the market to come up with a brunch tasting menu, and although $36 is not at the cheap end for brunch, the portions are substantial and I actually took all of the pastries and desserts home to snack on later.
The meal began with a house made bread basket of delightful bread sticks and buns.
Along with coffee a refreshing Jasmine Lemonade was in order.
The pastry basket was from French Made Baking and in included a flakey Butter Croissant and pain au Chocolat.
First up was a Cold Smoke Albacore Tuna Nicoise Salad with a flavourful Sundried Tomato Vinaigrette. The dish had plentiful tuna along with some fresh greens and was topped with a perfectly soft-boiled quail’s egg.
Next up was a choice between Slowly Baked Ling Cod, Carrot Confit, Cous Cous and Lemon Puree (the other choice was a Salmon with Truffle Mashed Potatoes and Snap Peas). The Ling Cod had refreshing citrus flavours along with hints of cumin and spice. Seafood was supplied by Blue Comet Seafood and veggies from Hannah Brook Farms produce.
The finale was a Valhrona Brownie with Crystallized Violet, an unreal Salted Caramel Blondie with Valhrona white Chocolate (on my top ten favourite things I ate this summer for sure!) and Walnuts and a fresh Summer Berry Tart from Beaucoup Patisserie.
More delights from Beaucoup Patesserie.
Erin Ireland’s To Die For Banana Bread.
Blue Comet Seafoods
My gorgeous friend Kristine Hancock with Hannah Brook Farms produce.
A post wedding brunch bought the children to Market and they danced along to the performer.
Wines by the lovely Roberta Black representing Thornhaven Estates Wines.
Local berries
More French Made Baking.
I had invited my lovely pal Nina Sohi-Brar to dine with me and as it happened she was allergic to seafood, so the menu was not the one for her and she tried the Sucrene and Arugula Salad, with Spicy Corn Vinaigrette and a more traditional breakfast of bacon and eggs.
The market itself including the above vendors as well as Mix Bakery, It’s to Die For Banana Bread, and wine samples from Thornhaven Wines.
