Fishermen Helping Kids with Cancer is proud to announce their second annual charity herring sale to take place on Saturday, November 24th between 7am and 4 pm (or until sold out!) at the south end of Trites Road in Steveston, Richmond, BC (12740 Trites Road). This sale is open to the public with all proceeds going to the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation to help kids with cancer.
The fisherman behind the idea for the event, Brent Melan recalls “the spark for the herring sale was the inspirational daughter of a fellow BC commercial fisherman. After a steadfast three year battle with cancer, she passed at 17 years old, just a few days before the inaugural event in December 2011.”
Event spokesperson and BC fisherman, Harvey Gifford says “the first annual herring sale attracted overwhelming support by from a broad cross-section of the commercial fishing industry. Fishermen, processors and many industry and community services and suppliers stepped up to volunteer, sponsor and donate. Ladner fisherman Randy Reifel donated the vessel MV Prosperity, fuel and licence and Steveston Seafood Auction donated the plant facilities and crew. In fact, all the costs big and small were donated by generous industry and community folks so we can proudly say that 100% of proceeds go to BC Children’s Hospital. Our goal was to raise $25,000. The herring sale and donations end up just shy of $60,000. This success compelled us to make it an annual event.”
This year the MV Prosperity expects to harvest 50 tonnes of herring from the nearby waters of the Gulf of Georgia and deliver this wonderfully fresh and delicious fish to the dock for sale at $10 for a 20lb bag of herring. Or customers can bring their own 5 gallon bucket. There will be live music and friendly volunteers to help customers to their cars.
Pacific herring are beautiful fin fish with bluish green colouration on their backs and shiny silver sides and bellies. They average 18 cm (7 inches) long and 110 g (1/4 lb) each. Their soft, off-white flesh with high oil content offers a wonderful full flavour and lends itself perfectly to many preparations including pickling, smoking, canning and salting.
