Restaurant Pick – Go Fish

Gord Martin closed shop at Bin 942 and replaced the spot with a second location of the hyper-popular Go Fish (the first is down at the fishing docks at Granville Island).  The room is breezy and oceanic, with comfortable booths, seats bar-side and a bright blue tables scattered around the cozy room.

The menu supports local fishermen and is 100% oceanwise, and much more than just the delicious fish and chips that most head down for.  Legendary fish tacos, scallop ceviche with just the right amount of spice and a shot of fresh mint lime foam, mussels in a drunken tequila sauce so tasty I had to tip the bowl and drink it, and if you are in luck, Chef Martin might be in the house and head off-menu and cook up something like the crab fingers we sampled – flavour-filled cornmeal crusted bites with a curried mangosteen sauce.

The booze list is geared towards seafood with some great local picks, red truck beers, and ketel one vodka for those on a high octane program and those who love their Caesars.

Great service from the enthusiastic staff and pleasant noises from the kitchen as Chef Rob and Matt have some friendly bantering over the the grill.

This is bound to be packed in no time, so go now or be prepared to line up like you have to at the other location.  However, know that it will be worth it.

Drinking well this week – Blasted Church Chardonnay Musque

Much more than just a funky name and charming label, this winery is crafting some refreshing summer whites.  The Chardonnay has aromas and flavours of orchard and tropical fruit with some citrus and mineral notes, this wine is fresh with some good acidity on the finish.

Cookbook – Tongue Twisters Gord Martin

Digging back in my library (published in 2003 and still very relevant)  this cookbook is all about intense flavour combos and cross-cultural cuisine that his restaurants Bin 941 and Bin 942 are so well known for.  Manly appetizer and tapas style recipes, this guide to entertaining will have your guests raving about your culinary abilities.  Try out the 3-citrus Halibut Ceviche, Grilled Volcanic Salt-Rubbed Halibut or the Halibut Brandade.  Of course there are many recipes for food other than our ingredient of the week, such as Tropical Fruit Kebabs, Venison, BBQ Chicken and Cheesecake with Banana Foster Sauce.
