LAMBRUSCO REGGIANO FRIZZANTE – MEDICI ERMETE CONCERTO 2017

If case you missed it, the Vancouver International Wine Festival was on last week. I’m not sure how anyone survives #vanwinefest because from the moment the doors open its wine tasting, cheese and ham noshing and people watching and hugging until it ends. When it’s over, my heart is full of love, my teeth usually stained purple with wine and my tummy is full of delicious ham, olives, cheese, crackers, crisps followed by espresso and chocolate.

This year the theme was France! There was no shortage of “good wine, good food and great people”. Vive la France! So you would think I’d recommend something French, n’est ce pas? Well I did consider it. However, I so enjoyed my Lambrusco tasting with Medici Ermete that I just had to steer you in the direction of a wine uniquely gastronomic – something that would make your #winewednesday sing!

Let me introduce you to Medici Ermete Concerto 2017. I highly recommend you stock up on a fatty salami, strong cheeses, salty olives and fresh Focaccia. Then pop open this bright ruby, very dry, cherry berry dominant style with hints of herbs and balsamic. It is well balanced and sparkles all the way down. It’s light on alcohol and big on flavour. The price is right at $19.99 at BC Liquor Stores. Lambrusco Reggiano Frizzante

A little back story

Lambrusco is an indigenous grape variety grown in the foodiest region of Italy – Emilia Romagna (think Modena Balsamico and Cheese).  It’s in the heart of northern Italy that the Medici family began producing wine and now, four generations later on 75 hectares the reputation is one of fantastic. The soils at Tenuta La Rampata (where Concerto grapes are sourced) are clayey and the plantings are dense.  150,000 bottles are produced in this style and sold broadly. This wine is also highly rated. Most recently awarded 91 pts from James Suckling. For more information follow this link. ( link (https://www.medici.it/en/)

What it goes with?

This wine is not one to age and should be consumed young – I’d say as soon as you get home. Lambrusco goes well with Tortellini, Lasagna and roast pork.  A classic dish from the old country would be Risotto with pumpkin and mushrooms. Flavour meets flavour.

Awards?

91 pts from James Suckling, 90 pts from Wine Spectator for this Lambrusco Reggiano Frizzante
