A 2017 UNICEF report on children in developed countries shows that Canada is behind when it comes to alleviating child hunger. Out of 41 wealthy countries, Canada ranked a shocking 37th for children having enough access to nutritious food, and that 12% of Canadian children are living in food-insecure homes.
Harrowing statistics like this prompted co-founders Jeremy Bryant and Andrew Hall to start Mealshare in 2013. For the last four years, Mealshare has been working to unite the hospitality industry to feed youth in need.
“We need to create awareness about youth hunger because it’s such a big issue in Canada, but not openly discussed,” says Jeremy Bryant, Co-Founder. “The problem often goes unaddressed because those affected are ashamed or unaware – children don’t know who to talk to about it, and parents may not address it because they know they should be providing for their families.”
Mealshare is partnered with 350 restaurants across Canada and recently entered the US starting in Austin, Texas. The non-profit provides a simple yet impactful giving program for restaurants — diners order Mealshare menu items at a partner restaurant and a simple, healthy meal is provided to a youth in need at no extra cost to the diner. The result: over 1.8 million meals have been provided to youth and children in need both locally and abroad.
Half of the meals Mealshare provides are given out through its local charity partners (in Vancouver, that’s Kidsafe, Boys & Girls Club of South Coast BC, and Breakfast Club of Canada) and the other half are provided to its international charity partners Save the Children Canada and WE Charity.
