Fall means Grape Expectations in the Thompson Okanagan: ‘Tis the season for harvest celebration. And with the 29th annual Okanagan Fall Wine Festival on the horizon, occasions to sniff, swirl and sip will soon be savoured. Here’s what’s in the glass during this 11-day gathering of the grape, featuring over 150 wine, food, educational and arts-focused events, October 1 – 11: What’s in the Bag?? kicks it off in Kelowna September 30 with a preview event that pits the guys against the gals in a heady blind tasting competition. Keep it in Kelowna and check out one of the festival’s biggest draws October 2 – 3 during two nights of WestJet Wine Tastings; here, guests will sip offerings from over 35 local winemakers. Looking to Get Down & Dirty & All Shook Up? Head south to Penticton October 2 – 3 for a lobster feast, vintages from Dirty Laundry Vineyards, and one heckava show, courtesy of spirited Elvis tribute artists. Family fun reigns further south in Oliver during the Festival of the Grape, October 4, thanks to live entertainment, wines from local vineyards, tasty treats, and an opportunity to stick your foot in it during the crowd-pleasing Great Canadian Grape Stomp. And for a little reverence, nearby Okanagan Falls conjures up a chorus of Amen! as Blasted Church Vineyards offers up not one but two Midnight Services, October 9 and 10. From 9:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. nightly each congregation features music that will inspire (the fabulous Ruthie Foster and her folksy-bluesy-soulful gospel band), plus food for the masses courtesy of BC’s heavenly Memphis Blues BBQ House. And let’s not forget about the morning menus; NK’MIP Cellars will break the fast October 2 through October 10 with their annual Breakfeast Club. A distinctly BC start to a day of wine touring and tasting. www.TheWineFestivals.com
