Poplar Grove Winery gives to South Okanagan Women in Need

One of British Columbia’s best known boutique wineries, is committed to creating a positive difference in the local community.

One of the goals at Poplar Grove Winery is to create a positive difference in the local community. Each year, the Poplar Grove team selects a charity to support; this year’s focus is the South Okanagan Women in Need Society (SOWINS). For the 2010 season, Poplar Grove’s tasting room team requested a tasting room donation with all money raised going to SOWINS.  Through the generosity of our 2010 tasting room visitors, on Dec 15, the Poplar Grove team presented the South Okanagan Women in Need Society with a cheque for $10,000.00.  The money raised will go a long way to making it a warmer winter for the clients of the South Okanagan Women in Need Society.

Ian Sutherland, Founder & Executive Winemaker of Poplar Grove, recently stated “we are thrilled to be able to support SOWINS with the charitable donation that originated from guests sharing wine in our tasting room.  The real credit goes to our tasting room staff for their good work and to our guests for their generosity.”

Tony Holler, President & majority owner of Poplar Grove Winery, said that “through bringing awareness to this important cause, we are hoping that we can encourage others to donate to SOWINS in efforts to make it a warmer winter for the clients of the South Okanagan Women in Need Society.”

Donna Henningson, Resources Coordinator, South Okanagan Women in Need Society, in accepting the donation said that “the crew at Poplar Grove and, in particular, the women in the tasting room really showed a lot of heart and initiative in asking for donations to SOWINS this past season. And it has paid off big time for us. Proceeds paid for our 2010 kids Christmas party with Santa, which saw 100 women and children. Poplar Grove proceeds will also pay for household extras to improve the Transition House. We’re very thrilled. Operational funds are tight this year. This money has come at a very good time. Poplar Grove: you are angels!”

About Poplar Grove
Poplar Grove is an international award winning winery located on the slopes of the Naramata Bench in the heart of the Okanagan Valley.  The winery focus is on Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah, and the aptly named Legacy, their premium blend.  Poplar Grove began in 1993 as a small winery in the Naramata Bench. Quite literally a “garagiste”, Ian Sutherland began making wines out of his garage. Over the years, Poplar Grove gained a far-reaching reputation for producing quality wines and winning numerous medals – two of which were the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Excellence (2002 Cabernet Franc and 2007 Syrah). In 2007, Tony Holler became majority owner and president. Ian Sutherland and Barrie Sali complete the newly defined ownership team. Mr. Holler brought with him 110 acres of prime vineyards throughout the Okanagan – which allows Poplar Grove to produce 100% estate grown top quality wines.
