Five of the city’s top amateur grill masters to get raked over the coals on Canada Day
RibFest began in 2009 at an East Van backyard BBQ hosted by restaurant industry wine buyer Jeff Curry. Since then, RibFest has been a battlefield where the city’s most ambitious amateur BBQ masters from restaurants across the city meet over the flames of competition.
On Canada Day — Wednesday, July 1st —Mamie Talyor’s (www.mamietaylors.ca) and Re-Up BBQ (www.reupbbq.com) are joining forces to bring RibFest out of the backyard and into the street — opening the grill games to the public for the first time.
Starting at 4pm, competitors will fire up their grills in front of Mamie Taylor’s restaurant in Chinatown (251 E. Georgia St.) to win bragging rights and the coveted DIY RibFest trophy.
At 7 pm, a judging panel of three experts (Scout Magazine founder Andrew Morrison, Mamie Taylor’s Chef Tobias Grignon and RibFest founder Jeff Curry) will choose the winner. For $5, a limited number of guests can sample the competition ribs and vote for their favourite on a first-come-first-serve basis. (Judging spots are very limited.)
Throughout the afternoon and late into the evening, Mamie Taylor’s will be serving $12 rib plates, smoked by Re-Up and featuring Chef Tobias Grignon’s signature BBQ sauce, alongside coleslaw and macaroni salad. A $5 beer special is available courtesy of Strange Fellows Brewing (www.strangefellowsbrewing.com).
