From Barb:

Happy wine Wednesday from deep in the vine lands south of Lake Balaton. I’m in Villány which is famous for red wine and considered the Beaune of Hungary.

Yesterday in Budapest I sat on a panel judging 36 styles of Hungarian Olaszriesling (a few bottles of Grasvina from Romania found their way into the tasting). This is one of the most planted varieties of white wine in Hungary and considered to be a table wine that in the summer sees a “spritzer revival” for patio sipping. In it’s best examples it is aromatic, freshly acidic, medium alcohol and body, showing pale lemon in the glass with citrus and stone fruit character followed by hints of bitter almond on the finish. It’s pretty and distinctive but not age worthy or expensive. It’s a good mid week sipper.

All this to say, there is still so much wine out in the world waiting for discovery. Keep exploring and be open to trying new styles and varieties. We were very fortunate to live in Canada, a country that imports good wine from around the world.

So what will you be sipping this wine Wednesday?

The reason I’m in Hungary is because my roots are Hungarian, Scottish and Italian. I have talked about Hungarian wine in this preamble so I thought I would recommend something red and delicious from Italy. Here is something I found before Christmas at the BC Signature Liquor store that went really well with a plate of freshly made spaghetti bolognese.

San Fabiano Calcinaia Casa Boschino 2015. Rustic blackberry on the nose, some hints of spice and herbs that follows on the tongue with bright acidity and medium body. It’s dry and finishes on a grippy red fruit note. It’s a food wine based on a blend of Sangiovese (70%), Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Bonus points – the grapes are organic!
