Hot Cross Buns remind me of my childhood. We had them at Easter every year, but they weren’t always my favourite. I hated the ones with the candied and coloured fruit in them and used to pick those out, and preferred the icing over the other strange plastic-like topping some had. Later on in life I baked my own and of course never added those terrible bits. Now that time is tight and my time spent in the kitchen is unfortunately limited, so I’ve had to outsource. I’ve come to find that Terra Breads has my favourite buns. They’ve got just the amount of spice, raisins and are topped with a generous cross of icing. Toast them up and top with butter and jam, or just warm slightly and eat plain as there’s plenty of flavour in the buns alone.
For those interested in the more than just eating the buns, I’ll note their historical significance. They are eaten on Good Friday in Christian households with the cross stands stands for the Crucifixion. The buns went through a black period when Protestant England banned the sale of them as they saw them as they stood for a symbol of Catholic belief. Sharing a bun with another promotes friendship, especially if one says “Half for you and half for me, Between us two shall goodwill be”, and many kiss the hot cross buns before eating, just like a cross.
Anyway you slice them, they’re a tasty treat that I miss once Easter’s over. Available at Terra Breads until April 9th!
