Ocean Wise™, a national sustainable seafood initiative of the Vancouver Aquarium, proudly announces this year’s line-up of Ocean Wise chef finalists in Vancouver who will brandish their ladles and battle to take home the city’s best sustainable seafood chowder title.
Tickets for the 2013 Vancouver Aquarium Ocean Wise Chowder Chowdown competition, on November 20 at the Vancouver Aquarium, are available online at vanaqua.org/chowdown. Guests are encouraged to purchase tickets early to avoid disappointment as the event sells out early every year.
Although considered a friendly cook-off, the annual Vancouver Aquarium Ocean Wise Chowder Chowdown is marked by stiff competition that produces delicious results. Top Vancouver chefs compete for votes from the high-profile judges’ panel that selects the 2013 Vancouver Aquarium Ocean Wise Chowder Chowdown Champion. Chefs also vie for the title of People’s Choice winner, chosen by the hundreds of guests who devote their palates to the task of savouring each mouthwatering chowder paired with craft beer.
“The Ocean Wise Chowder Chowdown is a fun and delicious way to recruit guests, and their taste buds, to the sustainable seafood movement,” says Ann-Marie Copping, manager of the Vancouver Aquarium Ocean Wise program. “While sampling delectable chowders, guests learn about the importance of making ocean-friendly seafood choices. With 90 per cent of our large, predatory seafood already gone from our oceans, choosing sustainable seafood has never been more paramount.”
The line-up of local Ocean Wise chefs contending for the winning title of 2013 Ocean Wise Chowder Chowdown Champion in Vancouver includes:
- Chef Chris Whitaker | Forage at the Listel Hotel (Defending Champion)
- Chef Ned Bell | YEW Restaurant + Bar at the Four Seasons Hotel Vancouver
- Chef Aleks Kornat | Manhattan Restaurant at Delta Vancouver Suites
- Chef Michael Lackner | Sodexo Canada
- Chef Joanna Astudillo | Vancouver Aquarium Catering & Events
