Events and Happenings In And Around Vancouver This Week

Looks like sunshine is on its way this weekend and we’re getting up to 24 degrees by Sunday. We’ve already let you know about the Spot Prawn Festival here, and the BC Buy Local initiative here, but we wanted to mention some great ways to learn some new cooking techniques, the fact that the North Van Shipyards are back and a chance to try some premium tequilas. Get out there and celebrate the sun.

THE GOURMET WAREHOUSE – CHOCOLATE CHALLENGE 2018 | 6:30 PM-9:00PM

Proceeds from this event will benefit: Vancouver Firefighter Charities SNACKS FOR KIDS Program (supplying a daily healthy snack to at-risk Vancouver students) PROJECT CHEF (teaching inner-city kids to prepare healthy meals), and STRATHCONA BACKPACK PROGRAM (filling the “hunger gap” of the weekend for kids in need)

Six of BC’s finest chocolatiers will be working alongside their top protégés to bring you a unique and delicious bonbons. Judged by some of the top chocolatiers in Vancouver these seven experts will decide who has the best creation. Your judges include:

Learn to Make Meatballs & Carbonarra – May 14 6pm-8pm Kits Community Centre

Know how to make pasta? Take it to the next level with Meatballs and Sauces! In this demonstration style cooking class Peter Ciuffa, of Pasta Boy Peter Inc., provides all the knowledge so you can cook for those you love. Students will learn to make Meatballs in a Mamma Ciuffa style Roman Sauce (a tomato braised meat sauce) as well as the classic Carbonarra. Afterwards, you will sample each one tossed with pasta. REGISTER

Tour D’Italia Cooking Class at Dirty Apron May 11 6:30pm-9pm

Part of the Demo & Dine-style cooking class series, where you join the instructing chef for an intimate evening of culinary education, delicious food and beautiful wine. No aprons will be dirtied or needed in this two and a half hour class – the four course tasting meal will be prepared right in front of you as you sit back, relax and learn through watching, listening and tasting. Taking you through each course step-by-step, the instructing chef will share his tips, tricks and tools of the trade and then serve each demonstrated dish alongside a glass of wine.

North Vancouver’s Shipyards Night Market – Fridays from 5pm-10pm

10,000+ nightly visitors typically converge on the picturesque waterfront setting in Lower Lonsdale to experience the Shipyards Night Market’s vibrant atmosphere. Close to downtown Vancouver and easy to get to via the Seabus, those who join in on this weekly FREE event will see the Shipyards Plaza transformed into a lively celebration site and discover 100+ vendors and a full farmers and artisans marketplace of locally made products. Visitors can eat their way through the night tasting fresh dishes from 40+ food trucks and food vendors and then chase it all down with ice-cold craft beer, cider and wine offered in the 19+ beer garden.

Live entertainment on the Shipbuilders’ Stage will keep the party going until 10 p.m., showcasing a wide variety of musical talent from across BC including Mostly Marley (May 4), Big Easy Funk Ensemble (May 11), Persons of Interest (May 18), Freeflow (May 25) and more throughout the summer.
