Entrance to the Festivals is free; there will be a small fee for tickets to purchase samples. The original Spot Prawn Festival, now in its 5th year, takes place at False Creek Fisherman’s Wharf in Vancouver on Saturday, May 7, 2011.

The Okanagan festivals are community driven and will feature chefs preparing Wild BC Spot Prawns samples to taste. The Kelowna Festival will feature Junior Chefs vying for the best prawn recipe, voted on by media, guest chefs and consumers alike. Ocean Wise from the Vancouver Aquarium will be on hand to educate Festival participants about the sustainability of this delectable seafood. Live Wild BC Spot Prawns will be available on site for sale from Codfather’s, and recipe cards from some of Canada’s top chefs will guide consumers through preparation of the prawns.

About Wild BC Spot Prawns

Wild BC Spot Prawns are a delicacy known around the world for their sweet, delicate flavour and firm texture. They are most recognizable for their reddish brown colour, which turns bright pink when cooked, defining white spots on their tail and white horizontal bars on the carapace. Spot prawns are the largest of the seven commercial species of shrimp found on the west coast of Canada. Wild BC Spot Prawns are available live during the short harvest season, which usually starts in May and lasts anywhere from six to eight weeks. Prawn fishermen spread baited traps along the rocky ocean floor at depths ranging from 40 to 100 metres. This method has minimal impact on ocean habitat and very low levels of bycatch of other species.
