After Three Decades, Pioneering BC Winemaker Mark Wendenburg Goes Solo

Celebrated Okanagan winemaker launches his new firm, Wendenburg Wine Consulting

Mark Wendenburg, celebrated Okanagan winemaker announces the launch of his new firm, Wendenburg Wine Consulting. After 30 years of making award-winning wines for Sumac Ridge Estate Winery and putting both the winery and British Columbia VQA wine on the world wine map, Wendenburg is arguably one of the best-known names in Canadian wine.

More information:

Mark Wendenburg was winemaker at Sumac Ridge Estate Winery from 1992 to 2010. As winemaker for one of British Columbia’s biggest and most award-winning Okanagan wineries, Wendenburg comes away with a wealth of knowledge and talent gleaned from his years of local and international experience.  A trail-blazer, while at Sumac Ridge Estate Winery, Wendenburg made the very first Red Meritage in Canada in followed by the country’s first White Meritage. During his tenure, he also made the winery’s Private Reserve Gewurztraminer and Steller’s Jay Sparkling wines some of the largest VQA wines in Canada.

While Wendenburg found his work at Sumac Ridge rewarding, his own consultancy gives him the chance to work with a wide range of clients and varied portfolios. With the new set of services he offers, not only is he bound to get the best of both the vineyard and cellar worlds, but so are his clients. And to Wendenburg, that’s what’s most important. In the midst of all his excitement at the prospect of making wine for new vineyards, Wendenburg remains grounded as he continues to tend to his family’s own Pinot Blanc vines, planted in 1980.

Recently, Wendenburg proudly shared that his first wine-consulting client is Haywire Winery, a new vineyard in its fourth leaf for the 2010 vintage, located in Summerland, BC. Says Wendenburg, “I’m pleased about the possibilities of this fruit and site,” and for the future accolades that will surely follow!
