BLOGGERS BAKE FOR THE QUAKE

on

On April 20th from 6 – 8:30 p.m. the public is invited to a very special fundraiser at the Roundhouse Community Centre located at 181 Roundhouse Mews (the corner of Pacific and Davie) in Yaletown.

Organized by two of Vancouver’s top food bloggers, Melody Fury of Gourmet Fury/ Vancouver Food Tour and Joy Jose of Gourmeted, Bake for the Quake will benefit Japanese earthquake and tsunami relief through Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières). The event is billed as ‘helping Japan’s earthquake victims one bite at a time.’

These are ladies with clout in the food community, so you can expect to see some pretty amazing goodies created for the sale by some of Vancouver’s food bloggers, pastry chefs and bakers. Both professionals and amateurs are invited to participate. Already signed up are Kimberley Mulla of Kimberley’s Kitchen (www.kimberleyskitchen.com), Emily Seeton of Ems Gems – Treats for Tea (http://emsgems.ca), Cathy Wong of SweeTease Cupcakes (www.sweeteasecupcakes.com) and Brian Robinson of Robinson Fine Food (robinsonfinefood.blogspot.com).

This is an event that was not only created by social media mavens, it was created on social media. The idea itself came about as the result of a series of Tweets between Joy and Melody, who have not actually ever met in person. As Ms. Fury explains “On the night of the quake, many of us were following along on Twitter, reluctant to sleep. The hashtag #prayforJapan started, and although I was praying in my heart, an idea stirred in my head. I tweeted and facebooked at 11:58pm on March 10th ‘let’s start to plan how to help Japan recover as quickly as possible. I’ll do my part.’ People agreed, jumped on, retweeted. Joy and I started chatting and thought about how to get the blogger/ social media / food media community together to help. On the spot, we created the hashtag #BakefortheQuake. The following morning, we started to research a venue and contacted Vancouver Coastal Health to get the ball rolling. The hashtag grew and more and more people showed interest and support by asking to bake or to volunteer.”
The pair are still soliciting donations of baked goods and looking for volunteers to assist at the event. For more details on donating, getting involved or just attending and purchasing goodies, visit http://bakeforthequake.com

Mark April 20th on your calendar and plan to pick up some sweet treats for tsunami relief. Oh yes, and because this is a fundraiser for a good cause, these treats come without calories.
