Wild Rice to open in New Westminster

CELEBRATING TEN BY ADDING NUMBER TWO

Ten years ago, on August 23rd 2001, Vancouver’s first modern Chinese restaurant opened its doors in an area of town that has since come to be known as Crosstown. Back then it didn’t have a name, and there was not another restaurant for blocks around. All that has changed.

In the intervening 10 years, Crosstown has developed into a thriving restaurant area adjacent to revitalized Chinatown and Gastown. During this time Wild Rice Modern Chinese has garnered accolades and awards worldwide for its innovative approach to Chinese cuisine – producing traditional dishes utilizing local, seasonal and sustainable ingredients. The ‘little Chinese bistro that could’ has not only survived 10 years; it has grown to the point where it is now embarking on a new adventure – the opening of a second location.

“The rumours have been flying for months,” says proprietor Andrew Wong. “However, we looked at a variety of locations and nothing was signed until yesterday. So now it is official – Wild Rice has found a home in New Westminster. We are moving into the River Market formerly known as New Westminster Quay Market. The area has developed so much over the past couple of years and the location is right on the water. We were offered a wonderful opportunity and couldn’t pass it up. We love the area – it has a great neighbourhood feel.”

Construction will start shortly on the new 3600 sq. ft. space (not counting an outside patio) at 122 – 810 Quayside Drive. The clean design by architect Marianne Amodio will encompass a lounge area as well as a dining space, including a living wall. As with the current location, design elements will balance old with new. It is anticipated that the new location will open sometime in mid to late October.

Wild Rice’s New Westminster location will be open six days a week (Tuesday through Sunday) for lunch and dinner. “This is a very exciting project for me and Executive Chef Todd Bright. Todd is joining me as a partner for this location. He will continue to act as Executive Chef for both locations with support from Restaurant Chefs in each. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate Wild Rice’s 10th birthday.”
