Wine Wednesday With Barb Wild Save-On-Foods

Barb Wild’s Weekly Pick Is The Deal At Save-On-Foods

Barb Wild has been sipping again and in this week’s post she shares a great wine deal at Save-On-Foods. Check out The Good Wine Gal site, and her previous picks here.

The Wine Deal at Save-on-Foods

I’m Good Wine Gal. I write about good wine and how to find it. My experience has informed my stories. From 2014 to 2018 I worked in private wine retail, and studied wine to the completion of WSET Diploma. Today I share stories to encourage wine lovers and help them find value and quality without spending the family inheritance.

Great Wine Deal

This week I’m sharing a Great Wine Deal that I stumbled upon! The deal I am talking about is this offer from Save-on-Foods. Use your Save-on-More card when you buy 12 bottles and get 10% off the purchase, plus an additional $1 a bottle. Nowhere in the province can you get a deal like this. Nowhere!

Backstory

In 2015, the laws in BC changed to allow wine, specifically BC VQA Wine, to be sold in grocery stores. It was recently ruled that the selling BC VQA wine only is in contravention of the World Trade Organization so changes are coming to accommodate international brands. In the meantime, Save-on-Foods now has 17 wine licenses. In the first year alone, they sold 1 million bottles. It’s remarkable.

Wine Wednesday Choices

My mom loves wine. She takes a bottle every week to her Friday Friends gathering. It’s what you do when you are 80. This week she asked if I would take her wine shopping because she didn’t want to deplete my collection. How thoughtful of her. She has some grocery shopping to do and she likes to shop at Save-on-Foods in the neighborhood. As it turned out we not only got our grocery shopping done (yes the toilet paper aisle was bare) but we also ended up shopping for wine.

Wines We Bought

Here is a summary of what we bought. Mom’s criteria was red wine only and screw cap preferred which was all but Winemaker’s Cut Syrah.  The least expensive bottle wasWayne Gretzky Red Blend $13.42 after discounts and the most expensive bottle was Winemaker’s Cut Syrah at $23.81 after discounts.

Bottles

  • 2018 Hester Creek Character (Okanagan Valley) – intense black plum & leather
  • 2018 Honest John’s Red Blend (Golden Mile) – soft blackberry & spice
  • 2018 Moraine Cliffhanger Red (Naramata Bench)– juicy mulberry, cassis & oak
  • 2017 Sandhill Merlot (Okanagan Valley) – smooth ripe black plum & oak spice
  • 2013 Sperling Pinot Noir (Kelowna) – soft cherry pie & spice
  • 2017 Winemaker’s Cut Syrah (Okanagan Valley) – crisp with long lasting black fruit flavours
  • 2017 Wayne Gretzky Cabernet Sauvignon (Niagara on the Lake) – complex black currant jelly
  • 2017 Wayne Gretzky Red Blend (Niagara on the Lake) – smooth blackberry & spice

We saved an average of $3 – $4 a bottle. The most exciting bottle for me is the 2013 Sperling Pinot Noir because Sperling is a quality producer and Pinot Noir with age can be savory and delicious. I chose these wines because these were top selling BC wine bottles at Legacy Liquor Store when I was BC Wine Buyer.

Check it out! Not sure how long this deal will last. Tell them Good Wine Gal sent you.  Happy Wine Wednesday.
